Together: Caring, Connected and Proud!

Hello UGent(ian),

We are Petra and Herwig, and we are running as a rector-and-vice-rector duo to lead Ghent University together with you in the coming years.

Our world is changing rapidly. Opinions often carry more weight than facts, and science is being called into question more and more. That makes it more important than ever to shape and implement policy based on scientific knowledge.

Restoring trust in science is crucial, not only for our university, but also for democracy and for the values that underpin our society. As a university, we bear a great responsibility in this regard.

Together, we want to continue developing Ghent University as a pioneer in evidence-based policy, guided by participatory leadership. What are our key focus areas?

First and foremost, research, both fundamental and applied. No research question should be off-limits. The freedom of academic inquiry is what makes us unique as a university, and the knowledge we generate must be shared.

We primarily disseminate this knowledge through education. Education must always be research-based, but we also have to train students to be critical thinkers who are open to diverse perspectives and engaged with society.

In addition, we aim to bring science and innovation closer to the general public, for example through the GUM, De Krook, and other initiatives for science communication and lifelong learning. We want to build bridges between science and entrepreneurs, and between science and industry. Valorising our research is essential for UGent’s position in Flanders, Europe, and the world.

Internationalisation plays a key role here. It goes beyond just exchanging students and researchers; it involves fostering a culture that reflects our values and is evident in our diversity policies

We also need to consider our role in the city and region, because Ghent University is part of the Ghent and Flemish ecosystem. Good collaboration with partner institutions is crucial in that regard.

To continue delivering high-quality education, research, and societal impact, we must also focus on diversity, sustainability, and mental well-being. This is not an “either/or” story, but an “and/and” story.

Enough about the content of our plans, which you can find elsewhere on this website. Now, let’s discuss how we want to make them a reality.

We see ourselves as bridge-builders and problem-solvers, with a clear vision of leadership that we want to put into practice. We believe in inspiring leadership: leaders who motivate others, instill trust, and bring together the best teams around them.

We want to cultivate a culture of trust, cooperation, and connectedness. We aim to strengthen our sense of community and spark pride, so that we can move UGent forward together. We can only do this by truly embracing the principle of “leading by example.” Together, we will shape the future of UGent, safeguard science, conduct innovative research, and provide excellent education and knowledge sharing—all under a shared vision.

“Leading by example” also means making decisions together, grounded in our internal expertise and with genuine participation. The challenges we face are significant: how do we reduce mental pressure on students and staff? How do we combine sustainability and innovation? How do we keep UGent agile in times of digitalization and budget cuts? And what about the protein transition and the rise of AI? These issues affect us all, and together we must find answers. We must draw on the knowledge and data at our disposal. We can—and should—all contribute to this as UGentians. That way, we foster a sense of ownership, community, and pride.

Care, connectedness, and pride are not empty words to us—they are values we want to embed in UGent’s DNA.

Dear colleagues and students, these elections are not about us—they are about you. Where do you want our university to go? What role should UGent play in society and in the world? For which shared values are you willing to stand up? These elections are about your future, your university. What do you need in order to study, work, and innovate here with pride and confidence?

Let’s start this conversation together. The outcome of this joint reflection will guide us for the next four years. We are grateful to be able to undertake this effort with all of you!
